Welcoming the First Batch of iNurse Nurses for Belgium

This April marked a significant milestone for the iNurse project, as we proudly welcomed the first cohort of Tibetan nurses to complete the in-person phase of their Dutch language training at Sarah College for Higher Tibetan Studies, Dharamsala.

After 2.5 months of online A1-level Dutch instruction, the nurses gathered in person for an intensive A2 course, culminating in the official CNaVT A2 exam. The exam was conducted by Mr. Thomas van Berckel, a highly experienced examiner and founder of the Dutch Association in India. We are honored to have had him lead this essential step in the nurses’ journey to Belgium.

A Month of Growth, Dedication, and Community

April was more than just academic progress — it was a time of connection, transformation, and shared purpose. Our participants didn’t just study Dutch; they built a community grounded in trust, cultural exchange, and mutual encouragement.

From early morning classes to late-night study sessions, from shared meals to heartfelt laughter, this first iNurse group truly embodied the spirit of the project — committed, capable, and full of heart.

Heartfelt Thanks to Sarah Institute

We extend our deepest gratitude to Gen Passang Tsering la, Principal of Sarah College, for his visionary support. His leadership created a nurturing and inspiring environment where our nurses could thrive — academically, personally, and culturally.

We are equally thankful to Gen Jigme Lodoe la and Gen Dhamchoe la for their ongoing encouragement and wise guidance, and to the entire Sarah Institute community for the warmth, hospitality, and support that made our stay so memorable.

Cultural Engagement Beyond the Classroom

Our time at Sarah wasn’t limited to academics. The nurses actively participated in campus clean-up drives, celebrated Lhakar (White Wednesday) through dance and cultural exchange, and bonded with fellow students across departments.

A highlight of the month was a special visit to the Norbulingka Institute of Tibetan Arts, where Gen Passang la personally introduced Mr. Thomas van Berckel to the rich cultural heritage of Tibet — a beautiful reminder of the deep roots that sustain our community.

A Global Exchange of Learning

We were delighted to host Karen from Ghent, a long-time student of the Tibetan language at Sarah. Karen kindly introduced Belgium and its healthcare system to our nurses, fostering a genuine intercultural dialogue. Her presence was a powerful example of how learning and understanding flow both ways.

Acknowledging the iNurse Team

This milestone would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our dedicated team:

  • Tenzin Chunyee and Tenzin Kyizom, who traveled from Belgium to guide, support, and mentor the nurses throughout the in-person phase.
  • Kalsang Choedon, who played a crucial role during the online training and remains a vital part of the iNurse journey.
  • Ms. Kiki Kalsang Choedon, founder of iNurse, whose vision continues to bridge continents and create meaningful futures for Tibetan nurses.

Official Visits & Diplomatic Support

During this time, iNurse also engaged in important conversations with key diplomatic partners. Meetings were held with:

  • The Belgian Ambassador in New Delhi
  • The Belgian Consulate in Mumbai

These engagements reaffirmed our shared commitment to creating ethical, sustainable, and culturally aware pathways for international nursing careers.

Looking Ahead

As our first group prepares for their next steps, we look forward to welcoming them back in September — stronger, more confident, and ready for the next chapter in Belgium.

We are proud of everything this cohort has achieved and excited for what lies ahead. Their journey is a testament to the power of education, community, and cross-cultural collaboration.
